First, it is hard to believe it 3 months since my first post! Time sure flies when you get busy. But, I will admit there was a decision made to suspend collections for a time at the end of August, and then going through September. When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, we all saw the devastation caused by the record rainfall associated with the storm. And, it created an outpouring of support from our great nation. It just didn't seem right to be asking for funds to help with campaigns at that time. Then, those of us in Florida experienced our own hurricane, and there was no way we could ask for funds when so many of our own residents needed our help. So, that would explain why we slowed down our fund raising efforts. But, we hit the ground running in October, for sure!
Several big milestones occurred for the political committee in October. First, we reached our initial goal of raising $10,000! We received a $1000 check from the Sandhill Hunt Club from Taylor County, that pushed us past the $10K mark. That was quickly followed by another $1,000 contribution from the North Central Florida Dog Hunters Association, and we are thankful for both of those outstanding donations. More recently, I had the chance to attend and speak at the annual meeting and chili dinner held by the Florida State Dog Hunters Association, in Crawfordville. The Association had already sent in a $1,000 contribution back in August, but they wanted me to speak to their members. I'm glad I was provided with that opportunity, because I left their meeting with contributions from 114 members totaling over $1200!
As much fun as I have raising funds, the really fun part is when the political committee gets to start making contributions, and I know many of you have been waiting for this moment. In October, the Florida Sportsmen United Political Committee made its first contribution, in the amount of $2,500, to the campaign of Adam Putnam. Adam is a 5th generation Floridian, the current Ag Commissioner of Florida, and he is running for the republican nomination to become Governor of our great state.
We are very proud to support Adam and his campaign, and look forward to making more contributions in the near future. However, we were not finished with Adam! October was a busy month of fund raising by members of the Florida Legislature, and the FSUPC took the opportunity to present some smaller, but no less important, checks to several members of the Florida Legislator's Sportsmen's Caucus. Checks were presented to Rep. Jayer Williamson and Rep. Holly Raschein. Rep. Williamson has been a key supporter of hunters who use the Blackwater State Forest WMA. Rep. Raschein chairs the House Committee on Natural Resources and Public Lands, and she was the recipient of the Legislator of the Year Award from the Florida Airboat Association in 2017. In addition to these contributions, the committee also supported the campaigns of the following representatives: Brad Drake, Paul Renner (future Speaker of the House), Mel Ponder, Heather Fitzenhagan, Marylynn Magar and Cyndi Stevenson.
Of course, none of these contributions would have been possible without the support of all of you who have contributed, so thank you again for opening your wallets to help support those who help us!
